Edith Sitwell (1887–1964) was a poet, critic, and personality of the twenties and thirties. Editor of the anti-Georgian anthology Wheels 1916–21; ‘in early youth took an intense dislike to simplicity’ (Who’s Who, 1933). She became a Catholic in 1955. Hopkins was also discussed by her in Trio (1938).

Aspects of Modern Poetry is an idiosyncratic commentary on modern poets and critics, with a good deal of mockery at the expense of Geoffrey Grigson and, especially, F.R. Leavis (‘the only difference between them lies in Dr Leavis’ gift for wincing’).
