Theyearsfrom1955to1965forcedanidentitycrisisattheLSTM.Britain's associationwithcertainpartsoftheempireended.TheGoldCoastbecame GhanainMarch1957:thefirstoftheAfricancoloniestogainindependence.By 1966,theotherWestAfricanterritoriesjoinedGhanaasmembersofthe Commonwealth.Atthelevelofnationalpoliciesforaid,therewasadisjunction betweentheBritishandnewlyindependentgovernmentsbutindividuallinks couldstillbefostered.
