ABSTRACT

On 10 February 1966, the Director General of the WHO, Dr Marcolino G Candau, opened the new wing of the LSTM, confirming the international status of the School. 1 The new wing offered a public opportunity to move away from its past association with colonial politics and economics. The opening ceremony reinforced the image that the School was now an independent institution dedicated to global health care. The LSTM hoped that recognition at the international level would be rewarded by greater government support of the single institution in Britain concerned exclusively with tropical medicine.
