Mr Gissing's studies of English middle-class life and character are models of veracity, and are always as interesting as any fiction of a sober and unromantic character can be. The Paying Guest is a mere sketch, not even a novelette, so far as the story is concerned, but it is as fme and true in its way as In the Year ofJubilee.
