ABSTRACT

The intention of this chapter is to complement Tadeusz Skorupski's primarily textually-based account with a more ethnographic description of religion, health and suffering in one particular Buddhist society, Tibet. What happens in an actual contemporary Buddhist society is more complex than one finds in the texts, for several reasons. In particular, (1) the texts are old, and are often far distant from current practice, and (2) other things are happening which are not reflected in the texts.
