ABSTRACT

The economic construction endeavours were also halted. In 1951 the Anxi Bus Company, which had drawn large enthusiastic backing among the overseas Anxiese prior to 1949, invited the Singapore Anxi Association to invest in the company and to send delegates to participate in the general meeting of shareholders in Anxi. The management committee meeting in Singapore revealed that ‘no one is interested in this invitation and no delegates are to be dispatched’(Anxi Association MM, Feb. 25, 1951). The effort to build roads in the hometown by the Pan-Malaya Federation of Nan’an Associations was entirely stopped after the Communist take-over (Nan’an Association 1986:38).
