ABSTRACT

The monastic ordination, and the monastic regime as a whole, was defined in all its details by a whole armoury of regulations. An immense literature contained minute prescriptions for these matters. The rules of discipline (Vinaya, Tib. 'dul ba), formed a part of the scriptures, and had to be accepted without question. This was true alsoof themfifo (Skt. Sutra) and rgyud (Skt. Tantra), in other words those scriptures in which the revelations of the Buddha or of his disciples are contained and transmitted.
