ABSTRACT
T he symbolic equation of the Great Hare with the Dawnis closely paralleled in Ancient Egypt, where the Hare-deity is connected with ideas of 'opening' and 'uprising', in addition °to its more universal connection with the moon. It is to the deep insight of Le Page Renouf into the workings of the human mind that we are indebted for this information, based on a psychological investigation into the reasons for the remarkable fact that an Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph used in writing for the auxiliary verb' to be ' is the hare.
