ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the concern for quality, quality assessment, national standards and quality assurance that permeates higher education. It points to the links between the assessment of student learning and the assessment of educational provision. It discusses the notion of graduateness and the drive towards competence and it explores the purposes of higher education.
