ABSTRACT

In writing a chapter about the works of creative artists labelled as being “of Maghrebi immigrant origin,” I find myself taking as an initial starting point a criterion of ethnicity that in many ways runs counter to my main line of argument. In the first part of this chapter, I will sketch out a range of individual artistic paths, basing my discussion on specific examples of works chosen to reflect five major criteria:

Ethnicity: the authors or artists of these works are all of Maghrebi immigrant origin, i.e. they were born and/or raised in France;

Recognition by French cultural institutions;

Diversity of artistic forms: the works discussed come from a variety of different creative fields (design, painting, sculpture);

Personal choice;

Possible unintentional omissions, to the extent that I may be ignorant of certain works.
