ABSTRACT
In his history, Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. Jarir al-Tabari (224--310 A.H.) preserves an unusual report concerning the dying instructions of the first Umayyad Caliph Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan. The report is given on the authority of 'Abd al-A'la b. Maymun, on the authority of his father.
