GETTING STARTED: TECHNOLOGY AS A PRODUCTIVE TOOL Before any advanced discussion can take place about the use of technology as an educational tool, we must first consider the basic skills expected of twenty-first-century teachers. The rapid development of new and emergent technologies has drastically changed the way people live, and in turn, these developments have also changed the perception of what it means to be a technologically proficient teacher. Teachers are now expected to bring with them certain prerequisite skills regarding the use of technology. For example, when was the last time you heard of a school offering professional development for teachers about composing type written documents or sending electronic mail (email)?
