ABSTRACT

So far in this book I have presented the results of research on BSL without very much consideration of how those results are obtained. I have given the results of data analysis, but little information about the prerequisite to data analysis, which is data collection. In this chapter, however, I shall focus primarily on the methodological problems of data collection in sign language research. My aim will be to create general awareness of the extent to which the choice of methods of data collection can affect the results of analysis, and to give practical guidance to those considering doing sign language research.
