ABSTRACT

/0/ and /J/ in the South West. The strength of this feature is best seen in furrow Ph215 where the voiced forms extend eastwards to Sussex and northw ards to Herefordshire. The m aps o f finger Ph214, from Ph218, Friday Ph219, saddle Ph226, seven Ph227, thigh Ph232 and thimble Ph233, however, show that voiceless forms are well established in south-east Cornwall and also in o ther enclaves within the main area o f voiced forms in the maps of fleas Ph216, floor Ph217, sweat Ph231, three Ph234 and thread Ph235. The standard voiceless forms are obviously gaining ground in sure Ph228, snow Ph229 and swearing Ph230, where the voiced forms are isolated in two or three small areas.
