ABSTRACT

THERE is scarcely for the finding a savage or primitive race which docs not employ torture either in its religious rites or its code of punishment. The nearness to animal behaviourism, which is a characteristic of savage life, is responsible for a crudity and a barbarity which appal modern civilization. Because of this fundamental approximation to nature, the tortures. adopted by these savage tribes lack the ingenuity and subtlety of those originated by civilized and semicivilized races.
