IF there were really such a thing as historical geography ; if that name had not been usurped by uninteresting lists of names applying to localities, determinations of political boundaries and simple sketches or else dry descriptions of administrative history, 1 the chief problem confronting it would be the very existence of the great nations of the modern world.
