ABSTRACT

F r o m the middle of the quaternary era, Man appears simul­ taneously in Europe, Africa, and Asia at a number of sites, which grow more numerous with the discoveries of every year. But the first soil really propitious to a normal develop­ ment of civilization and to advances in political and social life has for many thousands of years been found by man only in the south-east of the Mediterranean from the Nile to Mesopotamia.
