ABSTRACT
The emergence of religious communities online facilitates shifts in patterns of commitment and belonging with significant implications for offline activity. This chapter focuses on “community” and pursues three questions concerning discourse, practice, and context: How is the term “community” defined, attributed and contested? What networks, boundaries and norms emerge in spaces defined as “communities”? Finally, how do online communities challenge or support more traditional religious formations?
