ABSTRACT

In my own experience, the study of the silkworm was the most fascinating though not by any means the most exciting. At that time every farm household reared silkworms and produced raw silk by primitive methods. Sericulture is now marked by factories with tall slender chimneys where only the most scientific methods are employed. The silkworms and moths stilI go through the same cycle of life, but losses through disease have been practically eliminated. In ancient times only royalty were privileged to wear silk, and princesses took care of the worms. Even today, in order to carryon the old tradition, the Empress rears enough silkworms annually for one dress.
