ABSTRACT

The Imperial duck hunt, held once a year in the grounds of one of the Imperial palaces, is highly entertaining for the Emperor and his guests. No guns are used. Hunters are armed with only a long pole having a net at one end, the wild ducks being caught like butterflies. Private duck ponds are arranged with about fifteen shallow canals leading out from the banks. These canals are only two yards wide and about twenty yards long. They are lined with heavy shrubbery and have a screen at one end made of earth or concrete, equipped with peep-holes. Food is dropped into the canal through a long bam-
