ABSTRACT
Nearly all the farmers' wells in those days looked exactly like the old American wells seen in New England, being "T" shaped, with a stone tied at one end of the crossbar for ballast. Stone linings for wells are no longer used in Japan, as cement has been found so much easier to handle. At one time there was a public well in every village where the women gathered to mix conversation with their washing activities.
