Buddhist temples. The Shinto gate is simplicity itself, unadorned with carvings and figures, but having a strong appeal for its beauty in outline, like that of early vases made before glazing and decorating were known, when the esthetic sense expressed itself with delicacy of instinct and variety of lines.
