ABSTRACT

If a foreigner went to the Ueno Station in April and found difficulty in approaching the ticket office because of the crowds, and noticed posters advertising special excursion rates, he might wonder what it was all about. The stir has its source in love for nature and the out-of-doors. The throngs which crowd the special trains, taking advantage of reduced rates, are heading for some place famous for its cherry blossoms. The great crush before the third-class ticket office shows a predominance of plain people. They are dressed in bright cotton kimono, sometimes tucked up into the belt behind.
