Another great difference in their method is in painting without either models or the scene before their eyes. In order to work in this manner it is necessary to study and retain a great mass of visual facts in the mind. The thoroughness with which a Japanese artist builds up his "vocabulary" of visual facts is truly amazing. It also explains in some degree the fact that a young artist must put in an
apprenticeship of ten years before he is allowed to produce professionally.
