ABSTRACT

While living in San Francisco I met some Japanese naval men who invited me to bring some of my friends to visit their ship which was anchored in the bay. I telephoned four men, and that evening when we assembled at the Embarcadero I explained the custom of sake drinking and cautioned them that it would be considered impolite to refuse any proffered food. On arriving at the ship we were warmly greeted by the officers on deck and taken to the Petty Officers' Quarters where we sat on one side of a long mess table.
