ABSTRACT

With the advent of railroads a new way of committing suicide presented itself, and hanging went out of practice. The most approved method of self-destruction now is to leap into the Mihara volcano on the island of Oshima. There is a strong movement in Japan against suicide, and preventive measures are being taken in department stores and high buildings where roofs are open to the public. At volcanoes and places favored by suicides police patrols arrest many suspects. Sentiment, however, still endows the act with beauty and tenderness.
