ABSTRACT

The social phenomena which before the end of the VIIIth century had brought about remarkable changes in the economic life of Greece were to act with increasing intensity during the two and a half centuries of the following period, the archaic. More and more the genos breaks up and within the narrow family the power of the father becomes weaker; the growing freedom of the individual keeps pace with the growing strength of the State. The survivals of collective ownership vanish in favour of personal ownership. There are awakenings of initiative and releasings of energy.
