ABSTRACT

We have already noted that a large part of industry, all that was connected with food and clothing, was a domestic occupation in Homer’s time. We also know that in professional industry the trades which were truly separated were as yet only distinguished by their raw material, and numbered only four, the teklon (wood and stone), the chalkeus (metal), the skytotomos (leather), and the Kerameus (clay). Clearly industry is not highly developed, Let us try to see more closely the point at which it had arrived.
