WHETHER we approach the coasts of the Ionian Sea or those of the ...Egean, or go down from the north by land, following, through valleys and gorges, from Macedonia to the Isthmus of Corinth, the road of all the invasions, always and everywhere Greece appears as a mountainous country. The mountains occupy nearly 80 % of the Greek mainland and still more of the isles.
