ABSTRACT

A song sung at weddings in the musahari tola 1 in village Banma: ‘Friends, had I known that he would consume poison and die like this […] I would not have married him.’ Mukhilal translated the song from Maithili to Hindi. Yet, I did not follow it. Mukhilal translated it for me again in a different manner: ‘Suppose Bambholi knew that he is going to die in Thiruvananthapuram, would he have chosen to go to Kerala for work?’
