ABSTRACT
For the object which I have in view, it is necessary and sufficient, in the following chapters, to point out the relation of religious, artistic, and literary facts to political and social institutions, and then to define, if possible, the historical meaning of the evolution revealed by rituals, dogmas, temples, tombs, statues, paintings, and books.
