ABSTRACT
Temples and tombs demanded the collective effort of every art and craft. So architecture was the great “ work ” , in which the architect directed “ all the work ” of artists and craftsmen, with whom learned and literary men collaborated. Not until fairly late did the arts come to be differentiated and develop according to the genius of individual artists.
