ABSTRACT

Ever since the origins of the first school systems in Australia in the 19th century, the main area in which they gave specific curriculum attention to a spiritual and moral dimension has been in religious education. This remains the case today, even though there are changes on the horizon—that is, educational initiatives that are based on a notion of spirituality that is not necessarily religious. This chapter, which follows on from a previous chapter describing the religious component to spiritual education in Australian schools, 1 is concerned with some of these new initiatives.
