ABSTRACT
The great empire founded by Cyrus and Darius I was no more; nothing took its place, for the dying Alexander left the throne to the worthiest, and the result was general disintegration, and the reappearance of nationalities which had for two centuries been gathered together under the dominion of the Achæmenids.
