ABSTRACT

A yearning for leadership at a time of crisis is a theme in writing on leadership (Hansbrough 2005: 74). The interest in finding potential leaders in trade unions (TUs) in Eastern Europe and in the UK is therefore unsurprising given the challenges facing TUs in both East and West. I am interested in approaches which enable women and men to challenge taken-for-granted assumptions both about leadership and about how unions organise, and through this process to develop women's leadership.
