ABSTRACT
This chapter moves away from the structural features of language to explore the ways that words convey meanings. This area will be familiar to readers with a background in literature study. The key concept is ‘figurative’ language. Pupils quickly learn to use the terms – metaphor, simile, connotation – to describe features of texts, but need to show a subtle understanding of the effects.
