ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the sounds used to form words in English. Although individual sounds do not have a meaning, there is clearly a shared emotional response to the effects of sounds. Pupils at Key Stage 3 and 4 should be aware of sounds and their effects; for example: vowel, consonant, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia.
