ABSTRACT

Genomics involves prenatal screening, artificial insemination, testtube babies, using another's womb to have one's own baby, human embryo stem cell research, organ transplantation, euthanasia, human cloning and so on. In China, each of these topics has been widely discussed and debated. Most people in this country believe in Marxist materialism and atheism, and deem science and technology as the first productive force. Today, China pursues a strategy of relying on science and technology to achieve prosperity and is becoming a commodity society. Meanwhile the traditional Confucian culture attaches great importance to blood relationship and ethical values, treating the family as the basic unit of society, which has been a very strong conservative force. Chinese genomics has evolved in relation to these two cultural values.
