ABSTRACT

In China, most applications and research of genetics and genomics have been under ethical, legal and social scrutiny in recent years, and some controversies are ongoing and unresolved. The 'eugenics' issue is very sensitive within China as well as elsewhere. The dispute on Chinese 'eugenics' occurred as a result of the 'Law of The People's Republic of China on Maternal and Infant Health Care', which was enacted in 1994. Afterwards, many Chinese thought about what Chinese eugenics is and why the response to the law was so negative. Part of the explanation may be that eugenics, in China, is not the same set of ideas and practices as eugenics in other countries.
