ABSTRACT
Although the United Provinces and England had led the way in economic progress, France was not far behind them, and the size of her population made her in modern times the most important Western power. The history of French industry, therefore, demands full treatment, and in order to make that history more intelligible it may be useful to remind the reader of the sudden crises through which it passed.
