ABSTRACT
Looking back over the three centuries we have just studied, we naturally see there many survivals of the preceding epoch. Medieval society on the whole had been characterised by the predominance of the warlike spirit over the mercantile or, more properly, the economic spirit. Force of arms had prevailed over wealth.
