ABSTRACT
In Goethe the relation of Europe to the East reached its maturity. With him, then, our work comes to a natural conclusion. The few words here added are merely intended to explain how it was that the very period covered by Goethe's life coincided with a dccline—of course only in the spiritual sense—of European relations with the East.
