ABSTRACT

Students (even in the early grades) can learn complex material in subjects such as history, although success depends heavily on the methods used (Barton & Levstik, 2004). Bruner (1960) asserted that “any subject can be taught effectively in some intellectually honest form to any child at any stage of development” (p. 33). Experience confirms that even uninspiring-looking subject matter can be made comprehensible and enlivened through imaginative, engaging instruction.
