ABSTRACT

By the spring of I 789, Vannetti had accumulated an enormous amount of material. Unfortunately, the fame of his Liber Memorialis, spreading far and wide, had alienated from him all Cagliostro's supporters. None of them would consent to help

the spiteful author of that satire. And Vannetti, though he continued his investigations, was regretting more and more his inability to benefit by the advice of those who had had dealings with the Count and been taken into his confidence. How much enlightenment could he derive from the disciples, especially Jacques Sarasin, who was so familiar with the Count! But there was no use in making friendly overtures. No response ever came from the" White House."
