ABSTRACT

On prostitution the Old Testament says in the 5th Book of Moses, XXIII. 18: ·"Thou shalt not go, being the hire of a whore, into the-house of the Lord thy God for any vow." In the 2nd Book of Moses, XXII, 15 and 16, every dishonorable association is forbidden under severe penalties. In the 3rd Book of Moses, XXI, 9, it is said: "And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire." The burning occurs after stoning as a public degradation after which comes death; and the shame marks of the stones become apparent on the burnt one. Moses, 1, Book XXXVIII, 24 and 3; Book XX, 14. In spite of this "harlots" were no novelty among the Hebrews. Under Antiochus all kinds of lewdness were indulged in with women on a sacred plane.
