ABSTRACT

THE first question that anybody would ask who wanted to know something of the life led by the ancient inhabitants of Luxor~r rrhebes as it was called by the Greek and Latin writers-would in all probability be: "What sort of houses did they live in 1" So I propose to begin the first chapter of this book by giving as briefly as possible what will, I hope, be a satisfactory answer to this by no means unintelligent question.
