Because soap opera is a highly segmented structure whose essential fracture of narrative produces a dispersed subjectivity, it is perfectly suited to the type of distracted viewing which characterizes television as an institution. As John Ellis points out, television is a medium which “engages the look and the glance rather than the gaze.”
