ABSTRACT

Zoologists divide the land areas of the world into six major faunal regions, each comprising a number of sub-regions. The IndoChinese sub-region of the' Oriental' major region is a large triangular area extending from the eastern Himalayas (Darjeeling district) to Hong Kong in the north and to the isthmus of Kra in the south. The fauna of this area has a certain uniformity of type. A large number of its species are common to the whole region, and, in the higher units of classification, the genera and sometimes even the families are peculiar to it. In this chapter, however, only that part of the subregion known as French Indo-China is considered, and the term Indo-China when used refers to that area.
