ABSTRACT

In this era of mass immigration, or Worlds in Motion as one notable book called it (Massey et al. 2005), societies around the world are becoming more and more racially and ethnically diverse. One result of this increasing diversity is an increase in the multiracial population, reflecting either children of intermarriage or greater precision in identifying one's ancestry, or both. With Census 2000, the United States began officially counting the multiracial population, marking a new era in terms of measuring race. For the first time ever, people were allowed to choose as many races as they wanted on the Census form.
