ABSTRACT

Grant Overton (1887-1930), American critic and editor, author of The Philosophy of Fiction (1928) and The American Novel (1929). The first two paragraphs below are from Overton's American Nights Entertainment (New York: Appleton, 1923), pp. 34-5. The rest of the selection is an extract from an essay entitled 'The Twentieth Century Gothic of Aldous Huxley' in Overton's Cargoes for Crusoes (New York: Appleton, 1924), pp. 97-113. Overton's essay was among the first responses to recognize, with Will Cuppy (No. 16), Huxley's fundamentally serious aim. In fact, Overton's foresight in identifying so surely the mystical character of Huxley's mind was quite remarkable. See Introduc tion, pp. 12, 14.
